Welcome to the IEEE Summit on Technology for Health

Transforming Healthcare and Wellbeing

Tuesday, 5 December 2017 | The Hotel | Boulevard de Waterloo 38, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.

On Tuesday, 5 December 2017 in Brussels, we are delighted to be hosting a major European Summit – Technology for Health: Transforming Healthcare and Wellbeing.

The Summit will bring together policymakers, leaders in the healthcare, medical technology and electronics industries as well as expert patients in order to facilitate a dialogue on healthcare enabled by connected technologies, including smart wearables, bio-sensors and implantable technologies.

The Summit will tackle the issue of innovation in healthcare, focusing on innovative wearable, bio-sensing and implantable technologies and their impact in terms of societal transformation. The Summit will also address the resulting ethical concerns and behavioural challenges linked to these transformative technologies, and reflect on the key roles of R&D, standardization, as well as policy and regulatory actions, in creating the right conditions for bringing cutting-edge technology innovations to market for societal benefit

An opening address will be delivered by James A. Jefferies, the IEEE President-Elect, at the start of the Summit followed by keynote addresses on the key issues at stake in the current debate about innovation in technology-enabled healthcare, from societal, policy and industry perspectives.

Summit keynotes include:

Three panel discussions will approach connected healthcare technologies from different perspectives, focusing on:

  1. The technological advances and the transformative role they play.
  2. The challenges around the resulting data deluge and how to protect and manage personal data.
  3. The need for a paradigm shift in how health and wellbeing is (self) managed at the human level to accommodate and derive benefits from these technological changes.

Why attend the IEEE Summit?

Overall, the Summit will provide a policy platform for discussion of the opportunities and challenges presented by technological advances in connected healthcare and wellbeing, and will stimulate debate on how best to overcome the challenges while fully leveraging the opportunities.

The Summit will provide participants with an opportunity to:

  1. Gain a broader understanding of the latest advances, potential applications and opportunities, and the ethical issues which connected healthcare technologies raise for our society.
  2. Benefit from latest insight into the current European policy landscape, as well as priorities for future policy.
  3. Learn about the important roles played by R&D, standardization, policy, and regulatory actions in creating the right conditions for bringing cutting-edge technology innovations to market for societal benefit.
